You will be picked up by a houseboat at 12:00 noon from your Kumarakom hotel, and your overnight stay will be aboard the Rainbow Cruises houseboat. These traditional houseboats, once known as kettuvalloms, were originally constructed by lashing together pieces of wood. Surprisingly, not a single nail is used in their construction. Instead, jackwood planks are meticulously joined using coir rope and then coated with a black resin derived from boiled cashew nut shells. Nowadays, these impressive 80-foot-long vessels have been transformed into lavishly furnished houseboats.
A typical kettuvallom typically features one or two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, an open lounge, a deck, a small kitchenette, and a crew comprising skilled oarsmen, a cook, and a guide.
